I will be the first to admit I love shopping, and if I can get a bargain, that is even better. That’s why I love going to the Farmer’s Market. It is a great place to get quality foods that are homegrown, in season, and relatively inexpensive. It is also a great place to get the creative juices flowing and support local farms. Even if you are just there to walk around and take in the experience it is a great place to be. I try to buy local foods as often as I can. I find that the food tastes better because it is real. At my market, you can get anything from fresh fruits and veggies to eggs that were laid that morning.
Today I put myself to the test. How much produce can I buy for $20.00 at the Farmer’s Market? I have to say I was quite impressed. Here’s what I got:
Sugar Snap Peas,
Not only was that about all that I could carry, but it is all that my family can eat before it goes bad. Be sure to check out the picture just to see how much I got.
Tonight’s menu is all about freshness- a fresh fruit salad with peaches, nectarines and strawberries, lamb marinated in olive oil, lemon juice, Kosher salt, pepper, an Italian blend of spices, green onions, and garlic, and grilled zucchini.
I hope that you are inspired to seek out local food not only to have the freshest ingredients to feed your family, but also to help local farmers compete with big commercial farms and chain stores. I mean who really wants to buy fruits and veggies under florescent lights anyway.
