Wake up and smell the coffee

I am one of those people that likes to have a hot drink in the morning. While I prefer tea, I have an occasional cup of coffee here and there. Last week I was in the mood for dunkin' doughnuts. One of my favorite things to get when I go to dunkin' are one of their wake up wraps and a medium tea. I started getting them when they first came out, and kept getting them because they were cheap and less calories than most things on their menu. I couldn't go to dunkin' because my husband had my car, so why not make my own?

A great way to use up leftovers. In a rush? Make the eggs the night before and nuke the whole thing or wrap it up and roll out!

I got to work on recreating the wrap, which wasn't hard at all.  I used a small tortilla, 1 egg, and a slice of American cheese. I warmed the tortilla up in the microwave, scrambled an egg and topped with cheese. I topped the tortilla with the egg and that was that.  I made myself a cup of tea and had breakfast in a flash. It took less than 5 minutes, which is something that I cannot say about the drive-thru.

Then I got to thinking, am I saving money making them at home? Here is what I found:

At Home Wake Up Wrap

10 Count Tortilla, 1.99 = .20 each
16 Count Cheese Single, 2.69 = .17 each
Dozen Eggs 1.29 = .12 each

Cost per wrap = .49 each
Dunkin' Wake Up Wrap= 1.05 includes tax
That's a savings of .56 per wrap. Not to mention the amount of gas and time you save not waiting in line.
But what if I want a cup of coffee with my wrap?

At Home Coffee

11.3 oz Ground Coffee (80 servings) 3.29 = 0.04 per 6 oz cup
Coffee Filter .99 for 100 = 0.01 each
1 gallon Water (16 servings) .79 = 0.05 per 8 oz cup
8 oz Cream (16 servings) 1.29 = .08 per tablespoon
5 gallon bag Sugar (567 servings) 2.59 = .005 per teaspoon

Cost for 15 oz coffee with 1 Tbsp cream and 2 tsp sugar = .30

Cost for Medium (14 oz) Coffee with cream and sugar from Dunkin' = 1.79 includes tax

Prefer tea?

At Home Tea
100 count tea bags, 2.99 = .03 each
1 gallon Water (16 servings) .79 = 0.05 per 8 oz cup

8 oz Cream (16 servings) 1.29 = .08 per tablespoon

5 gallon bag Sugar (567 servings) 2.59 = .005 per teaspoon

Cost for 15 oz tea  with 1Tbsp cream and 2 tsp sugar = .31
Cost for Medium (14 oz) Tea with cream and sugar from Dunkin' = 1.79 includes tax

Whether you make coffee or tea with your wrap, you save over $2.00 making it at home. While that might not seem like a lot consider the savings if you buy breakfast twice a week for a year. I have found that it is so easy to spend money on conveniences that aren't that convenient.

Happy Cooking and Saving!

Joy, you have inspired me to make breakfast wraps for breakfast with week. Now, all I have to do is get up early enough to make my own coffee or tea...that will be my challenge for the week.
