Daniel Fast 2013

January 6th kicks off a huge 21 day Daniel Fast for 2012. If you aren't familiar with the Daniel Fast I would suggest first reading the book of Daniel. There are two fasts in Daniel, the first is a 10 day vegetable and water fast. Then later there is a second fast that is a fast from meat, sweets, and alcohol and is 21 days. I'm doing the second one. A fast is a time of prayer, bible reading, and drawing near the Lord. I would encourage you to search your heart and see if the Lord is calling you to this fast, you might be surprised at what you hear.

Since this is such a big lifestyle change it's hard to know just where to begin. I would encourage you to make a game plan.

Build a Menu.
Find some recipes that fit the fast and build a menu to make sure that you are getting what you need, aren't starving and unsure what to make, and don't have to go to the grocery store and be enticed by all the sweets, meats, and wine you see. Cutting this temptation out as much as you can will go a long way.

Ease into the fast and ease back out of the fast.
I don't recommend going on a 3 day junk fest in the days before the fast. Likewise, you wouldn't want to sit down after the fast and do a Man vs. Food style burger challenge. There is going to be some withdraw, especially if most of what you eat is processed sugars and meat.

Prepare your home.
A few days before the fast you may want to clean out your cupboards. I'm sure that there are tons of things that are going to be temptations days into the fast. If you can remove some of these it will free up the time you will spend thinking about the bag of chocolate chips in the freezer for prayer and praise.

Go into the fast with a specific prayer target.
Prayerfully discern where the Lord is leading you to pray. Is he leading you to pray for the salvation of your family? Finances? The way you speak to others? Find out!

Keep a journal.
Keep a journal of your encounters with the Lord, any breakthroughs, and struggles you are having., prayers that the Lord has laid on your heart, and anything you think might help you later in the fast, or on a subsequent fast.

Be open to the move of the Holy Spirit.

You don't have to end the fast at the 21 days. Maybe the Spirit wants you to fast longer, shorter, or do some other type of modification. If the Spirit leads, follow it and prepare for breakthrough.
