The Heimlich Maneuver

Last night my family was watching a movie, enjoying a little snack, and hanging out. A few minutes later my one year old choked .He really was in peril. He wasn't breathing, was turning deep red, couldn't cough or speak. I quickly sprung to action and gave my child the Heimlich. It took just a few seconds that felt like an eternity, but eventually his stuck snack came out and he was safe. It happened so quickly. I am so thankful I knew what to do at the time. If I didn't I can't even think about what would have happened.

I was first taught the Heimlich in a NICU training I went to when my oldest son was born. It was part of a baby safety video. I have to say I sort of forgot. I had a general idea but who knows if that would have saved my son.  I was scanning Pinterest and it just happened to be one of the pins. THANK YOU JESUS! I took two seconds, looked at the pin and moved on. I didn't think I would be using it any time soon. I honestly believe that quick review made all the difference. If you haven't learned the Heimlich Maneuver or it's been a while please take two minutes and watch the video below.

This video from HowCast.com is excellent!

Here are links for preforming the Heimlich on a child or an adult.

Hopefully you never have to use this. Last night as I tucked Ethan in I was so happy I took a few minutes to refresh my skills.
